    Braving the Weather

I just made it back from my morning walk. It’s a cloudy morning which often makes me ponder just when will the rain pour down.  I debated on whether to go to the gym and walk the treadmill instead. I prefer a walk in the park over the treadmill any day.  I have gotten caught in the rain on several occasions in the past.

I decided to go to the park to walk.  I felt a few rain drops falling. Definitely not enough for a wash out.  As I walked and I knew I was going to be able to get a complete walk in, I realized I could have let the dark clouds over head keep me from doing the one thing that I absolutely love.  In that very moment the clouds took on a whole new meaning.

The clouds are like the fears in our mind. The fear of what others think or say.  Success comes when we chose not to let the clouds in our minds keep us from do what we love to do. Go all in and enjoy the walk!

    Highlights

I wanted to say Happy Friday to everyone today.  As this week winds down I wanted to take a moment and share some of the great moments I had over the week.

On Monday I was able to get my car back from the repair shop. I started having problems with my car’s cooling system in May but I didn’t make getting it a repaired a big priority since I still had my husband’s car to use.  Now that the car is repaired and back on the road, I am able to take my son to school and then head to the park to get my morning walks in.  I love this time of the year because of the leaves turning colors and the cool crisp morning air.  Here is a picture I took of the walking trail.IMG_4676

Since, I take my son to school each morning and we have two lovely dogs, I have the honor of putting them outside each morning. I love watching the sunrise each morning. It’s just a beautiful reminder that each morning is a fresh start, a new beginning.

One of the best things I love to see on my walks is the morning dew dripping from the leaves.IMG_4692

Here is a picture of the boat house.

I wanted to share some of my favorite highlights of the week. Please feel free to comment and share some of yours. -Tonia

  • Just Start Somewhere

“Start before you’re ready.” ―Steven Pressfield

I read somewhere that if someone wants to build a social media presence you have to create something new each day. I whole heartily agree with this statement, but the hardest thing I find is being disciplined enough to sit down and start.

The one thing writing a blog has taught me is that you have to just simply push through the distractions. There certainly can be quite a few of them when you decided to put action behind an important task.  I had the same resistance when I started meditation.  I would sit down, get comfy and press play on my iPhone, as soon as Deepak would say close your eyes, thoughts of what I needed to take care of would pop in my head. I couldn’t stay focused.  The more I decided I was going to just sit there, I eventually got better.  I became less distracted by thoughts and gained more focus on my meditation practice. I know the same will happen on my writing.

I have been working on a few techniques that have helped me get more focused on accomplishing some tasks. I have found that if I get still and take some quiet time with myself, the topics of what I want to write about come to me.  When I sit quietly, I ask myself, “What is the message that I would like to bring forward at this moment?” Some of the best ideas have come to me by just waiting.  They have had some A-ha moments.

I have also found that by just writing out all of the thoughts that are in your head can be a great way to determine a topic to write about.  When you take a moment just to write out what’s on your mind, they don’t have to be organized at that moment, it’s just important to get your thoughts down on paper.  Then when you get the chance, go back and organize what you wrote.

The last idea on finding things to write about is just pressing play on your cell phone and just record what’s on your mind.  The most important thing with this method is not to leave them in the sound recording. Take a moment to go back, listen and write your ideas down in a notebook or journal.  Again the most import thing is to get your thoughts out of your head and down on paper.

As with most posts I write about, there is a lesson I would like to share.  This lesson is that you don’t have to things perfect to start, just simply begin with something.  I know my writing will improve the more I keep writing, but what I celebrate each time I post, is the simple fact that I did.

  • Don’t Be Scared

    Don’t Be Scared

The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.  ~Joseph Campbell

Many times during the walk I come across a flock of Canadian Geese.1024px-Geesespokaneriver Most of the time they are on the pond or on the lake.  On a few occasions these birds are close to the walking trail or crossing it.  As I come up on them, my heart starts racing and fear of them attacking me comes to mind.

I had a little run in with these birds a few years ago when I was going into one of my favorite retail shops, I accidentally walked to close to a nesting ground. The male bird started to fly towards me, squawking at me. I knew I was definitely in the wrong place. It frightened me and many of other patrons that tried to enter the shop that day.  Ever since that incident, I try to stay mindful of their presence and respect their space.

Recently, I have decided to give these birds names. IMG_1870My names are not meant to be harmful to these birds in any way. My names are meant as a visual reference for the fears generated in my mind. Instead of the sign saying “Caution Feeding Wildlife Can Be Harmful” I see “Caution Feeding Your Fears Can Be Harmful. For instance, in the picture above, I would name these birds confusion, worry, criticism and doubt. By giving the geese these names, I started learning to recognize the emotions that fear generates inside. By feeling and accepting the racing heart beat and the nervousness that arises, I recognize these are feelings of fear. It’s not that the fear will disappear, it is the fact that I have to feel the fear, breathe and keep on moving.

  • Just Leave it There

    Just Leave it There

Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most. -Guatama Buddha

Some days I just need to get a good walk in to refresh and renew my spirit. When I can feel my soul get heavy, a nice walk does wonders.  DSCF6033Now that it is starting to get colder here, it is getting harder to get my body moving. I’ve pushed my morning walks back from the 7 am to 10 am already.  With the thought of the cold air and having to bundle up, leave more time for the “I’m not going to the park today” attitude to creep in.  By 10 am, I have had my coffee and I get the feeling I can make it through the day without walking. Its not until the thoughts of self-doubt raise up that I know I should have chosen otherwise.

By the time I get my butt moving, the sun is usually shining bright and it’s a little bit warmer. My standard walk takes about an hour and a half to do. There is this one part of the trail I love to come to. DSCF4934Its the bridge. I call it the “don’t take it with you” bridge. There are eight observation areas built in along the bridge so you can stop and stand and not be in any one’s way.

When I leave off that bridge, I’m leaving my burdens there too. I vow not to leave off the same way I entered on.

Each day is a gift. Don’t squander your gift worried about the past or the future.

  • A Natural Rhythm

    A Natural Rhythm

Give your stress wings and let it fly away. ~Terri Guillemets

It’s amazing to watch the birds swoop up and down the way they do. DSCF4721I love watching them interact with each other.  It’s like they are so carefree. I never really paid much attention to nature the way I have this year.  I must admit that I have learned so much by just watching the birds play and the flowers bloom. There seems to be a natural rhythm that flows all around us.  Just when you see one group of flowers die off, another new batch of them bloom up.

This gives me a sense of hope, that despite what our surrounds may look like, you have to trust in the “process” or the flow of life. Each new day offers a new beginning and a chance to grow. Nothing in life ever stays the same.P1110960

Don’t let the stress of life weight you down. Like the quote says “Give your stress wings and let it fly away”.  When we get so caught up in worrying about the “what if”s and the “maybe”s we rob ourselves of the the here and now. Take some time out and just watch how nature unfolds, you just might learn something.

  • Life is What you Make of it!

Life is What you Make of it!

“Life is short, and it’s up to you to make it sweet.” – Sadie Delany

When I startedP1110967 on this spiritual journey, I didn’t even know that’s what it was. I started with taking walks in the park just as a way to relax and unwind from the stresses of life. I was under a lot of financial pressure and sunk really fast. The only relief I found was listening to my music and walking in the park.

I remember when I was much younger, I would say: “Life sucks!” Every time I would say that phrase, a woman I used to work with would say: “Life is what you make of it.”  That was over twenty years ago and during times of struggle, that phrase has become my flotation device.

It’s true that if you change your mindset, it will change your life.

What does this have to do with bees? Well, I used to be afraid of the bees.  After looking at them with a different perspective, I find myself fascinated with watching them lately. I know they are just doing what they are designed to do and they are not paying me no attention.

I love watching the beauty of life unfold today. I believe with all my heart,  Mrs. Brown was right. Life is what you make of it, it’s up to us to us to make it sweet!

    Thank you, Mrs. Brown.

    Beautifully Flawed

You are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful. -Amy Bloom

I was walking in the park this morning when is this little butterfly caught my attention. Taking a closer look at it, I saw its wings were damaged.

P1120114  Despite the damage to the wings, it still fluttered around among the blossoms.

P1120112It’s not what others think that holds us back from our being who we are, but what we tell ourselves that causes the biggest harm.

I’m sure this butterfly isn’t worried about if the world thinks it’s still beautiful or not. Why should we?

  • Just Keep Walking

    Just Keep Walking

“When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.” ―Haruki Murakami

On this one particular morning, I woke up and looked outside and saw the clouds.  I have been caught in the rain before, so I really pondered on going. But sometimes the desire out weights the logic.

The walk takes about an hour and a half, if I walk at a fair pacP1110692e. I was about an hour into the walk when I looked up and saw the dark clouds rolling in. I heard the thunder in the distance, so I knew I was going to get caught. There was no choice but to keep on walking especially if I wanted to get back to my car. This is when you know you just have to brace yourself.

I continued to walk and the rain started falling. The sky got darker and darker and the rain started to pour down harder. I still had quite a ways to go.  I was coming to a bend in the path when a deer jumped out. It scared the crap out of me, but I had no choice but to keep on walking.  By this time, I wanted to cry.  I started thinking I must look like a knucklehead out here on this path in this storm, but I had to keep walking.

I had about another 200 yards to the parking lot where my car was, when there was a very, very, very loud clap of thunder and I saw a flash of lightning. I was so scared I ducked down and wanted run for cover, but where was I going to run to? I kept walking. By the time I got to my car, I wP1120046as so drenched and surprising feeling accomplished. I had weathered the storm.

In life we have storms that will arise. No matter what happens around us or to us, it’s how we deal with them that makes the difference. By continuing to take one step at a time, I made it through the storm. It was a turning point in my life I will never forget.

  • Are We There Yet?

    Are We There Yet?

Acknowledging the good that is already in your life is the foundation for all abundance. -Eckhart Tolle

I have had a rough couple of days lately. There has been this overwhelming feeling like nothing is coming together.IMG_0918  The one book that has helped me put some of my feelings into perspective has been Eckhart Tolle’s book A New Earth.

Driving home from the park this morning, I threw a little “tempter tantrum” over things in my life.  I can look back know and laugh at myself but this morning was a different story.  I finished up my walk on a good note, when all of a sudden an overwhelming feeling of anger hit me. I got mad over my financial situation and the frustration of not having the money I “need” to take care of my family. By the time I got home, my feelings had subsided. I remembered that frustration comes from focusing on the lack instead of the abundance of this universe.

I try so often to stay focused on the fact that I’m not where I used to be,  but at times the thought that I’m not where I want to be seeps in and leaves me frustrated. I feel like the little kid in the car that keeps asking are we there yet?Screensaver1

The fact that I realize that this idea of lack is ” just an idea”, I was able to regain focus. I know at I times there will be rough patches that will pop up and I am not alone with these same frustrations. What we want out of this world we have to give to this world. In the book A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle says that also includes abundance.

I hope this helps others realize, we are all in this wonderful thing called Life together.
